A 1935 Re-release Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 17" [28 x 43 cm]; 10 pages) (Learn More)

Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1931 Rouben Mamoulian double-personality fantasy monster horror thriller ("Based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson") starring Fredric March (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in both title roles; he tied with Wallace Beery who won for The Champ), Miriam Hopkins, Rose Hobart, Holmes Herbert, Edgar Norton, and Halliwell Hobbes. Note that this movie premiered in New York City on New Year's Eve 1931, and then went into general release in the U.S. in 1932. So except for that one night, it is a 1932 movie, but because it is always identified as being from 1931, we also identify it that way! That also helps explain why there is movie paper dated 1933. It was a giant hit, and the movie was surely still in its first release into 1933, and more paper was printed as it was needed.

Important Added Info: Note that we mistakenly listed this pressbook as being from 1931 in our recent December Major Auction, because it is dated 1931 at the bottom. However, it was pointed out that the "analysis" section at the middle right of the cover talks about "when this movie was first released", indicating it is surely a re-release. Since this is a style of pressbook that was done by Paramount in the late 1920s and early/mid 1930s, we feel it is extremely likely that this pressbook is from the 1935 re-release of the movie (and what is written in the analysis section makes perfect sense for it to be from four years after the first release). We have never had this pressbook before, and it is surely extremely rare! Note that Paramount pressbooks at this time were printed on newsprint, and unlike those many studios, they did not have color covers or covers that were on a better quality paper stock. This means that Paramount pressbooks from around this time are incredibly scarce, because the newsprint almost always aged in the way that old newspapers do, becoming fragile and brittle, and surely most were thrown out within a few years of being created. Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!

Condition: very good to fine, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was never folded. It is printed on "newsprint" (newspaper-like pulp paper), and unlike the vast majority of 85 year-old newsprint items, it is NOT brittle, and it can be handled. The pages have slightly darkened, but otherwise, the pressbook is in amazing condition, all things considered.
