9k001 BLACK CONNECTION 1sh + 33 1/3 & 45 RPM promo records '74 Checkmates Ltd., rare promo pack!

Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price.

An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]). Also included are several other promotional items, including 33 1/3 and 45 RPM promo records (see below) (Learn More)

The Black Connection, the 1974 Michael Finn black African American blaxploitation action thriller ("Run nigger... run"; "What's wrong with the black man winning for a change?"; "Filmed in color in Las Vegas") starring The Checkmates Ltd. (Bobby Stevens, Marvin 'Sweet Louie' Smith, and Sonny Charles), Tommy Moe Raft, Steve Edwards, Pepper Davis, and Carmie. Note that "The Checkmates Ltd." were an American rhythm & blues singing group for Fort Wayne, Indiana. They included both black and white members (the above three, plus Harvey Trees, Bill Van Buskirk, Calvin Thomas, and Jimmy Milton), and they were discovered by Nancy Wilson of Heart. In 1969, they had a major hit with "Black Pearl", produced by Phil Spector (they also covered "Proud Mary"). They broke up the following year, but in 1974, three of them reunited, and they starred in this movie, and also continued singing (they sang the national anthem at the 1975 "Thrilla in Manila" Ali/Frazier heavyweight championship fight in the Philippines!). Lead singer Sonny Charles then had a solo career, but later, he reunited with Sweet Louie, and they performed together in the 2000s

Important Added Info: Note that this is a pretty rare one-sheet (we have only auctioned two of them in the past 15 years, and those sold for $195 and $210, both in "good to very good" condition). But now we have been consigned something really special! It is the promotional package that was sent to theaters in 1974 to try to get them to book the movie. It contains a one-sheet (folded an extra time so it would fit in the package), the 33 1/3 LP record from The Checkmates Ltd. (with a sticker on the back that says "PROMOTIONAL RECORD NOT FOR SALE"), the 45 from The Checkmates Ltd. with their song "Got To See 'U' Soon", in stereo on one side and mono on the other, and both sides have "PROMOTION COPY" and "NOT FOR SALE" printed on them. There is also a booklet called "the Checkmate Recipes", which gives recipes that are "prepared with love, peace & soul", because "the checkmates really 'cook' at the Flamingo Hilton" (the booklet was printed by The Flamingo Hilton, and their logo is on the back cover). There is an 8x10 music publicity still for The Checkmates Ltd., a news release about The Checkmates Ltd., a press release, and two reproduced newspaper articles! The items all come in the original corrugated mailing envelope, but that envelope has no printing or address information on it, because this was never mailed to a theater. We know that there are very few one-sheets from this movie that survive, but HERE you not only get the one-sheet, but you also get all these other promotional items, including both promotional records, and surely very few of these survive!

Condition: very good. The one-sheet was folded in half an extra time. The back of the bottom corner of the poster that was on the outside when it was fully folded has darkened, and that has darkened the front of that area somewhat (see our image). The 33 1/3 record has a "notch" in the top right corner of the jacket (this was almost always done with promotional records at this time to show that they were not to be resold). The blank sleeve of the 45RPM record has darkened on the back. The other items are in really nice condition (see our images of all items). The original corrugated mailer is blank, but the items will be sent in it.
