2d0004 SAM JAFFE a set of 9 signed letters '56-57 the great actor wanting to work while blacklisted!

A Set of 9 Autographed Letters (measuring from 4 1/2" x 7" to 8 1/2" x 11"). Also included are many other items that were not signed (see below). (Learn More)

Sam Jaffe was a Jewish actor from the 1930s to the 1980s. He was "blacklisted" in Hollywood in the early 1950s after making The Day the Earth Stood Still in 1951, and his career did not fully recover until he was hired by director William Wyler for his role in the 1959 version of Ben-Hur. Some of his other movies include: Lost Horizon, The Asphalt Jungle (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), The Day the Earth Stood Still, Ben-Hur, Gunga Din, The Scarlet Empress, and TV's "Ben Casey" (as Dr. Zorba). He passed away in 1984 at the age of 93.
Important Added Info: Note that these all of these letters have been personally autographed (signed) by Sam Jaffe! They were written between Sam Jaffe and Paul Kohner between 1956 and 1957, during the time he was blacklisted (see above), and detailing their efforts to get him work (there is fascinating content, not only about Jaffe, but also about this era). We have photographed each of the nine letters and there are also many telegrams and carbon copies of letters from and to Jaffe, and we have photographed the fronts of those (see our many images). Note that this item comes from the estate of Paul Kohner, who had a remarkable life! Kohner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, and he was a journalist working at his father's newspaper. He came to Hollywood after interviewing Carl Laemmle, who gave him a job as a publicity man. He became the head of Universal's European department in Berlin, and returned to the U.S. in the early 1930s, and left Universal in 1938, becoming a publicity agent. Among his clients were some of the greatest film stars ever, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and also great directors such as John Huston and Billy Wilder. He had close personal friendships with many of his clients, and he saved every bit of correspondence and paper work from his agency! He was married to actress Lupita Tovar from 1932 until his death in 1988. Amazingly, after his death, few institutions showed interest in his immense files, and only a small amount ended up being saved, with a lot literally thrown away! Our consignor purchased the item offered here from Mr. Kohner's estate in 1989, and he has held it until now, when he has consigned several items from Mr. Kohner's estate to eMoviePoster.com, and each item is being auctioned separately. Note: We have 19 images of the items in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 19 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 9.

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction.
