eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result p008 UNIVERSAL 1924/25 WHITE LIST movie campaign book Phantom! Date Sold 8/30/2007Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Studio Campaign Book, sometimes referred to as Studio Yearbook (measures 5" x 6 1/4"; 34 pages) (Learn More) Universal's White List, the 1924 - 1925 mini campaign book sent to individuals (NOT theater owners) to encourage them to go to their local theaters and ask them to show Universal movies! The book includes a letter from Carl Laemmle to the person reading the book, and 34 pages with one and two-page spreads on Universal's upcoming movies, including a pitch for theaters to bring back their greatest hit, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Some of the movies listed include "Smoldering Fires", "Oh, Doctor!", "I'll Show You the Town", "Let 'er Buck", "Overboard", "Fifth Avenue Models", "Don Dare-Devil", "Taming the West", and many more! We have included images of the covers of the book and five of the two-page spreads (and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones!). Included in this book is a two-page crossword puzzle with clues from "The Phantom of the Opera". Note that even though this book was sent to individuals, and not theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this little book is extremely rare! Note that some of the movies listed in this book may never have been made at all, and some had their titles changed, and some had their cast or director changed! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars! Important Added Info: Note that this is one of an excellent collection of nine extremely scarce studio campaign books we are selling this week on eBay (in nine separate auctions). Even though these are books that have sold for hundreds of dollars in the past, all begin with 99 cents with no reserve on any of them! Condition: very good. The book came with a clear cellophane over the front and back, and the cellophane is torn and creased in many places, but it served its purpose well, which was to protect the book underneath. The book is in excellent condition, with just a few very minor defects, and there are no cut outs or pages missing (campaign books are often found with missing pages, because theater owners would tear out pages to remind them to book the movie, and sometimes collectors took pages out of these books).
