An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Stage Play Still (Learn More) Of Mice and Men, the 1937 - 1938 George S. Kaufman stage play production (based on the novel by John Steinbeck) starring Wallace Ford (as George), and Lon Chaney Jr. (as Lennie). Note that the novel had been written in 1937 and was an immediate best seller, and the stage production opened later in 1937, while the book was still on the best seller lists. It premiered in San Francisco in October of 1937 (with Broderick Crawford as Lenny and Wallace Ford as George) and moved to Broadway in November of 1937 with the same leads. In 1939, it opened in Los Angeles, with Lon Chaney Jr. taking over the role of Lenny, but with Wallace Ford still as George. It was due to Chaney's fantastic reviews that led to his casting in the 1940 movie version directed by Lewis Milestone. Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, this still, which has been personally autographed (signed) by Lon Chaney Jr., is from the Los Angeles stage play production, which is from 1939, after the play closed on Broadway in 1938 (and Chaney was only in the Los Angeles cast). Mr. Chaney signed the photo "Lon Chaney Jr." with a fountain pen, and the signature has faded considerably, but you can clearly see it when you tilt it to the light (see our super-sized image). Note that this item was consigned by a major horror collector who attended many collectible shows and obtained autographs at shows and through the mail, and we are 100% certain his items are authentic! As is true of all the signed items we auction, we give every buyer of a signed item 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. Condition: fair to good. The signature has faded (see above). The still was folded vertically twice, and there are many creases scattered throughout. There is some tiny paper loss and tiny surface paper loss around the edges, with a few tiny stains (see our images of the front and back of the still). Learn More about condition grades
