An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) A Bout de Souffle (released in the U.S. in 1961 as "Breathless"), the classic 1960 Jean-Luc Godard French New Wave romantic gangster crime thriller (about a small time thief who steals a car and murders a policeman, and he tries to persuade his beautiful American journalism student girlfriend to run away to Italy with him, but she has misgivings) starring Jean Seberg, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Daniel Boulanger, Jean-Pierre Melville, Henri-Jacques Huet, Liliane David, Claude Mansard, and Van Doude. Note that this movie, together with Francois Truffaut's "Les quatre cents coups" began the French "New Wave", which revolutionized film-making, not only in France, but the world over! While we have auctioned several examples of the first release French one-panel (the last one sold for $2,110), this Italian one-panel poster is far more rare. We have only auctioned several Italian photobustas, but no larger Italian posters until we were consigned this one, and the last Italian photobusta we auctioned sold for $991! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small tears and tiny bits of paper loss scattered down the vertical fold, with small paper loss at the middle crossfolds, but fortunately, they all fall in solid areas. The poster had a lesser amount of tiny bits of paper loss and small tears on the horizontal folds, with a 4" diagonal tear in the right of the title, going between the "r" and "e" of "respiro". The poster's left, right, and bottom blank borders were trimmed off, and there was some paper loss scattered in the top blank border. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone replaced the blank borders with borders from another poster, and they performed restoration to the above defects, but you can see signs of the restoration. Still, I would think most collectors would be happy to display this extremely rare poster as it is, or certainly, one could choose to have additional restoration performed.
