An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 30" x 33" [76 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

Spirit of 1917, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("Join the United States Marines and be first in defense on land or sea") encouraging men to join the Marines, and featuring art of a U.S. Marine color guard leading the advance. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)!
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been trimmed, and for an unusual reason! It originally measured 30" x 40", and "Spirit of 1917" was printed across the top, in the top 7". But a recruiting station was likely using this poster in 1918, and so they felt the poster was "dated", so they surely trimmed off the top so that it would become "current" (in 1918, which is when World War I ended). The new owner of the poster could have that top area recreated, or they could choose to simply display the poster as is, but either way, all bidders must bear in mind this significant defect before bidding.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The top 7" of the poster was trimmed off (see above). Otherwise, the poster had creases, tiny tears, and some small paper loss around the edges, and some creases, smudges, stains, and scuffs scattered in the white areas. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Please do not bid on this poster unless you have read the above and looked at our super-sized image.
