The Southern Railway (sometimes shortened to "Southern") was a British railway company established in the 1923 by merging several existing railway companies into a single entity. The railway linked London with the Channel ports, South West England, South coast resorts and Kent. The railway was noted for its astute use of public relations and a coherent management structure headed by Sir Herbert Walker. The Southern Railway played a vital role in the World War II (WWII), embarking the British Expeditionary Force, during the Dunkirk operations, and supplying Operation Overlord (D-Day) in 1944; because the railway was primarily a passenger network, its success was an even more remarkable achievement. The Southern Railway operated a number of famous named trains, including the Brighton Belle, the Bournemouth Belle, the Golden Arrow and the Night Ferry. The Southern Railway was nationalized in 1948, becoming the Southern Region of British Railways.
Artist: Anna Zinkeisen
Important Added Info: Note that this poster was created around the same time, and which shows the White Cliffs of Dover, which became a Southern Railway route. We are also auctioning, in a separate auction, a second similar poster that was created in 1938, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone at Southampton Docks, which was later used and managed by the Southern Railway.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a few creases and tiny tears scattered in the image, and some tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well.
