The Cossacks, the 1928 George W. Hill silent Russia romantic war melodrama (based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy; about the son of the roughest, toughest Cossack in Russia, who is a peaceful, cheerful young man, and everyone thinks he is a coward, even his girlfriend!; the people have him wear an apron to show that he is like a woman, and he suddenly snaps, and becomes a fearsome fighter!) starring John Gilbert, Renee Adoree, Ernest Torrence, Nils Asther, and Paul Hurst

Important Added Info: Note that this is the Readers Library photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: Readers Library (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book, but in the case of this book, they included 8 pages of scenes in the center of the book, and we did not picture any of those. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads.

Condition: fair to good. The spine is entirely missing. There are tears around the edges of the front and back cover of the dust jacket, and the interior pages are rippled (see our images).
