A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 9 3/4" x 12 1/2" [25 x 32 cm]; 350 pages) (Learn More)

The Theatre Catalog 1942, the 1942 Jay Emanuel movie theater reference manual with information and advertisements from all facets of the movie theater business including management, interior, exterior, sound, projection, and even air conditioning! It appears that this book was marketed to people who were first entering the movie business, and was a "how to" book on all the latest things available to those who owned movie theaters, and it was surely an invaluable tool to anyone getting started in the movie business. The book also features many black & white images from theaters in the 1940s including The Apex Theatre, the Beach Theatre, and the Village Theatre as well as many others. Note that this book is incredibly similar to the American "Film Daily Yearbooks" or "Motion Picture Almanac", except that it is quite a bit larger (length and width), and we have never ever seen even one of these books before! Note that this series of books began in 1940, and that first book was "Volume I", and it was published annually after that, with each one noted as "Volume II", "Volume III", etc. Obviously, World War II might have interfered with the publishing of these books, and we know that at some point they changed from being named for one year to named for two years ("1948-49", etc). We were consigned a collection of these that included volumes as late as 1955-56, so we know it was at least published through that year. The volumes in the 1950s include much information about drive-ins! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Important Added Info: Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and one or more interior 2-page spreads.

Note that we are currently auctioning 227 different movie hardcover books (actually, there are more than this, because there are a few that contain more than one book). This is a pretty amazing collection! Almost all of them "coffee table books", meaning that they are oversized, and contain a lot of illustrations (sometimes with many color ones), and most have lavish bindings and cool full-color dust jackets! Many of these sold for $25 to $50 (or more) when they were first published, and many are very difficult to locate today! Yet, we are auctioning all of these with no reserve and a $1 start price, so there may be many bargains to be had, even on some really scarce books, some of which likely contain information that can be found nowhere else. Please bear in mind that some of these books are written in another language, but the ones we have included are heavily illustrated, so they are still of interest even if you don't speak that language. Finally, note that we will charge the actual cost of shipping these books to the purchasers. In the U.S., we can send them via "book rate", but outside the U.S., there is no longer any kind of "surface mail", so bear the shipping expense in mind BEFORE placing bids on these books (most of them weight at least a couple of pounds, and there are quite a few of them that weigh 4 or 5 pounds each!).

Condition: good to very good. It appears that there was a blank page just before the title page, because one page is missing, and we don't know what was on it, but it seems likely it was blank. When that page was torn out, it caused paper loss in the middle left of the title page. There is paper loss at the spine in that area. Other than these defects and some scuffing around the edges of the binding, the book is in pretty good condition!
