An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) James Cagney was a legendary actor from the 1930s to the 1980s. He was a huge success in crime movies in the early 1930s (almost always playing a gangster), and that unfortunately typecast him in those roles, but he continually fought against it, and he made several wonderful non-gangster movies as well. Some of his movies include: The Public Enemy, Yankee Doodle Dandy (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), White Heat, Ragtime, Angels With Dirty Faces (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), The Roaring Twenties, One, Two, Three, Love Me Or Leave Me (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film) and scores of others! He retired from show business completely in 1961, but he was coaxed out of retirement to appear in Milos Formal's Ragtime in 1981. He passed away in 1986 at the age of 86. Important Added Info: Note this still, which has been personally autographed (signed) by James Cagney, has a really cool story to go with it. It was sent to Mr. Cagney by noted autograph collector William D. Hosking, and Cagney started to sign it with a ball point pen, but the pen ran out of ink after he was half done. So he used a marker to write over the inscription ("Ouch!!! And best wishes"), and then signed the still with the marker in the middle right. Mr. Hosking had sent a backing board with the still, and Cagney wrote on the backing board, "The pen doesn't work! What I wrote was 'Ouch and best wishes', J.C." So the buyer of this photograph gets the inscribed photo and the separate backing board handwritten inscription and initialed signature (see our images). Also note that this still measures 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm]. Note that this item was consigned to us by an individual who owned a company that made movies and videos with famous celebrities in the 1980s and 1990s. The owner of the company would have the celebrities sign items from their famous films, and he also had correspondence with many famous celebrities which he saved. In addition, he would sometimes ask celebrities he came in contact with if they had signed items from other stars that they would sell to him, and he purchased a number of items that way. He also would purchase unsigned items from the famed Larry Edmunds Bookshop in Los Angeles or from other reputable Hollywood book stores and poster shops (to have the celebrities sign), and while he was doing that he would also purchase some of their signed items. So all of these autographed items we are auctioning were either obtained in person, obtained from celebrities who obtained them in person, or obtained from reputable Hollywood book stores, and we feel certain that the autograph(s) on this item is authentic! Condition: very good to fine. The inscription was written over, but this was done by Mr. Cagney himself (see above). There are three faint fingerprints in the top border of the still, and they certainly could be Mr. Cagney's! Otherwise, the still and the backing board are in quite nice condition.
