FIELD MINSTRELS 27x41 minstrel poster c1900 art of Alfred Griffin Hatfield, since 1886! Date Sold 6/30/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Unfolded Special Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Al. G. Field Minstrels was a traveling minstrel show from the 1900s to the the mid-1920s. The minstrel show (or minstrelsy) was an American form of entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and musical performances, and the shows were usually performed by white people in make-up or blackface. Al. G. Field was born Alfred Griffin Hatfield around the middle of the 19th century. Starting in 1875, he performed in the Sells Brothers Circus and began managing the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in 1884. In 1886, he opened his first traveling minstrel show with 27 performers. He passed away in 1921 at the age of 72. His last will and testament arranged for his minstrel show to be bequeathed to his brother Joseph E. Hatfield and to Edward Conard. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: good to very good. The poster was never machine folded, but it has three horizontal folds (one in the upper center, and two near the middle, at a slight diagonal). There are also creases, smudges, and a few tears around the edges. Someone put paper tape on the back of all the borders to reinforce them. After a relatively simple linenbacking, the poster will look fantastic! Learn More about condition grades
