An Original 1949 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 46 3/4" x 62 1/2" [119 x 159 cm]) (Learn More)

At the Circus, the 1939 Edward Buzzell musical screwball comedy ("Keep the world laughing!") starring The Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Kenny Baker, Florence Rice, Eve Arden, Margaret Dumont, Nat Pendleton, and Charles Gemora (as Gibraltar the gorilla). Note that this was the movie where the Marx Brothers sing the song "Lydia the Tattooed Lady"! Also note that MGM initially was going to call this movie "A Day at the Circus" (to capitalize on the success of "A Day at the Races"), but that title was dropped (although it is on a few stills). There was a working title of "Marx Bros At the Circus" that is also on some stills, but not the 1939 posters or lobby cards. To make things confusing, when MGM re-released the movie in 1962, the advertising made it look like the title of the movie was "Marx Bros At the Circus".

Artist: Jean Rene Poissonnie
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French one-panel! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 46 3/4" x 62 1/2" [119 x 159 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tears and areas of paper loss scattered along parts of several folds, with a few tears and small areas of paper loss in other places in the image. It had some scuffing and tiny stains scattered throughout the image. It had approximately 1/4" trimmed from the right blank border, with some tears and areas of paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. A talented restorer did a really nice job with the poster. They did not paint over all the defects, because that would have given the poster an extremely "restored" look, but instead, they performed just enough restoration to let the poster display well, but while leaving some signs of the defects. The poster will display well on the new owner's wall, even though it shows signs of its age and defects.
