Les Amis Des Orphelins de la Guerre (literally translates to "Friends of War Orphans"), the 1917 French World War I (WWI) Home Front charity poster (with taglines that translate to "City of Paris. Union of War Charities of the Town Hall of the 14th arrondissement."; "The debt contracted towards the War Orphans is a sacred obligation. It does not fall on the State alone, every French citizen has a share that he is bound to pay not only in money, but in love. The Society of the Friends of the War Orphans of the 14th arrondissement brings together those who are eager to fulfill their duty towards the children of their brothers who have died for them. The President. M.R.Ferdinand Brunot. You can enroll at the Town Hall, 1st floor daily from 9 to 11 and from 2 to 5") encouraging people to donate time and/or money to help war orphans. Note that this poster features Dominique Charles Fouqueray art of a nurse assisting a young woman and her child. It is also interesting to note that the people who worked for this charity apparently took a 3 hour lunch every day between 11am and 2pm!
Artist: Dominique Charles Fouqueray
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French war poster!

Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube).
What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had darkened somewhat, typical of French war posters of this period. It had paper loss at the top crossfold and tiny paper loss at the other crossfolds. It had tiny bits of paper loss in the top quarter of the vertical fold and in the top horizontal fold, with a lesser amount of wear on the other folds. It had some pinholes and small tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
