21eme Festival International D'Avoriaz Cinema Fantastique (literally translates to "21st Avoriaz International Festival of Fantasy Cinema"), the 1993 French film festival held from January 16th to the 23rd in Avoriaz, France. Some of the movies shown include: Army of Darkness, Pet Sematary Two, Fortress, Candyman, and many more. Festival d'Avoriaz was a legendary film festival which is known to have discovered many talented directors like Steven Spielberg for Duel (Grand Prix in the first year), Brian de Palma for Phantom of Paradise (Grand Prix in the third year), David Lynch for Eraserhead (Prix d'antenn d'or in the 6th year) and it continued until 1993 when Eaten Alive from Peter Jackson won the Grand Prix. Avoriaz is a winter sports resort in the French Alps and its atmosphere in the mountains matched the mood of many of the films. In the last Avoriaz festival, Christopher Lee was Head of the Jury and many historical vampire films were screened as a retrospective. The program for the festival introduces those vampire films, including many starring Christopher Lee such as his Hammer films. The 1993 event was the last year of the festival.
