Date Sold 3/7/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1986) Autographed Art Print (measures 22 1/2" x 39 3/4" [57 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) Laugh, Clown, Laugh, the 1928 Herbert Brenon silent romantic love triangle circus doomed romantic melodrama ("From the play by David Belasco and Tom Cushing"; Chaney is a circus clown who adopts an orphan girl, and when she grows up, he falls in love with her, but he is 30 years older than her, and she finds someone she likes better, and he basically commits suicide doing an impossible circus stunt) starring Lon Chaney Sr., Bernard Siegel, Loretta Young (in her first real role; she was just 15 years-old at the time, and had had bit parts for 10 years previous as a child actress!), Cissy Fitzgerald, Nils Asther, and Gwen Lee. This sounds like it should be a Tod Browning movie, with its extremely creepy plot, and a real life 15 year-old playing love scenes with a man older than her father, but it is not (it is based on a play by celebrated authors David Belasco and Tom Cushing)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Batiste Madalena Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by the artist, Batiste Madalena! When the book of some of his best works, "Movie Posters: The Paintings of Batiste Madalena", was published in 1986, some limited edition prints were created of some of the posters, which were signed by Mr. Madalena, and this is one of them (this print is an "artist's proof" that was printed in a much lesser amount for the artist by the printer; "AP" is handwritten on the print in the lower left corner; since AP's are "closer to the artist's hand" they tend to be more valuable than the prints of a signed and numbered limited edition)! Batiste Madalena was an American artist from the 1920s to the 1960s. He is best known for the original advertisements he created for the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, NY from 1924 to 1928. Mr. Eastman disliked the publicity materials created by the movie studios and persuaded Madalena to create original posters for his theater. Between 1924 and 1928 Madalena created an average of seven posters a week, a total of about 1,400 posters for the Eastman Theatre. The silent films he created advertisements for include Laugh, Clown, Laugh (starring Lon Chaney), Madame Sans-Gene (starring Gloria Swanson), and The Mysterious Lady (starring Greta Garbo). Condition: very good. The print has faint smudges and scuffs scattered in the solid black areas, but is generally in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
