An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style B One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, the classic 1936 Frank Capra (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) romantic inheritance comedy ("A new laugh-and-love team takes America by storm!"; "Rocking America with laughter!"; "Story by Clarence Budington Kelland"; "Screen play by Robert Riskin"; "Another great Frank Capra Production"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a small town "rube" from Mandrake Falls, Vermont, who inherits millions of dollars, and he goes to New York City to claim it, and everyone tries to swindle him out of the money, and a female reporter poses as his girlfriend to write stories about him, and he tries to give all the money away in loans to poor farmers who were hurt by the Great Depression, and he is given a sanity hearing, and he refuses to speak because of his girlfriend's deception, but it all works out quite nicely in the end!) starring Gary Cooper (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Longfellow Deeds), Jean Arthur (as Babe Bennett), George Bancroft, Lionel Stander, Douglass Dumbrille, H.B. Warner, Margaret McWade, Margaret Seddon, Emma Dunn, Walter Catlett, and Margarete Matzenauer. This movie was re-made in 2002 (as "Mr. Deeds") by Adam Sandler, with himself in the starring role. Also note that the plot of this movie is very similar to Times Square Lady, which came out the previous year, but with the sex of the heroes reversed (and the source stories for the two were written by different people). Interestingly, this movie was originally titled "Opera Hat", and it seems that it centered on the part of the story where Cooper becomes the head of the New York Opera House, and while that subplot was retained, the plot was greatly expanded!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this one-sheet, and that was 19 years ago, when it sold for $2,827.77! Not only that, but we have never auctioned any other first release posters other than window cards, lobby cards, and stills.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds and small tears and tiny bits of paper loss along most folds, and there was once tape on the back of most folds. There were pinholes and some tape stains around the edges, with pinholes in the right of Cooper's forehead and tiny pinholes near and partly in his eyes. There were tears and pinholes at the right end of the title, extending up into the bottom of the "R". Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Many years ago, someone backed the poster with no excess, and they did a pretty good job, given the poster's many defects described above. One could display the poster as is, or certainly, one might choose to have it professionally re-backed, but that will be the choice of the new owner of this rare poster.
