An Autographed Letter AND Book Cover (letter measures 8 1/2" x 11", book cover measures 4 1/4" x 7 1/4") (Learn More) Mickey Spillane was one of the best-selling fiction authors ever, primarily with his series of gritty pulp fiction crime detective novels, many of them starring "Mike Hammer". He was a department store salesman in 1940 when he discovered he could sell stories for comic books, and he quickly wrote for all the major companies. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Air Force and became a fighter pilot. After the war, he wrote "I, the Jury" in 19 days, and it was published in 1947, and it sold 6.5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Its hero, Mike Hammer, a hard-boiled private eye, would appear in many more novels. Spillane would write for the movies, and he even played Mike Hammer in "The Girl Hunters" in 1963! Spillane passed away in 2006 at the age of 88. Important Added Info: Note that both of these items (the letter and the book cover) have been personally autographed (signed) by Mickey Spillane! Our consignor was having correspondence with Mr. Spillane in 1995, sending him pictures which he would autograph in return. In this case, he sent him several pictures, a comic book, and a paperback book cover. Mr. Spillane returned the items along with a personally signed letter on his stationery. This auction is for that letter, plus the paperback book cover (our consignor sold the other items previously). The paperback book cover is really cool, because Mr. Spillane wrote an inscription on the back saying that it was his favorite and signed his name (see our image). Note that this item was consigned to us by a man who (together with his wife) has been a collector and dealer in autographs for decades! Over those years they obtained a huge number of autographed items through the mail, and they also attended many events where they could obtain autographs in person, and they also set up as dealers at collectible shows, where they would buy autographs and sell and trade some of their own. Over the years, they developed friendships with some of the celebrities they obtained autographs from, sometimes acquiring memorabilia of a particular celebrity that they would send to them as a gift, as a thank you for you the many autographs they obtained (in many cases, the items are personalized to either our consignor, or to his wife, or to both of them). If we know any information about how this specific item was obtained, it is written above. But in general, we feel it is quite likely that the autograph on this item is authentic, but our consignor does not have a certificate of authenticity. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. Condition: good to very good. The paperback book cover was separated from the rest of the book and part of the spine remains. It has creases and scuffs on both sides. The letter is in pretty nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
