7b001 BICYCLE THIEF Italian locandina R55 Vittorio De Sica's classic Ladri di biciclette!

A 1955 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Italian Locandina Movie Poster (measures 13 1/4" x 27 1/2" [34 x 70 cm]) (Learn More)

Ladri di biciclette (released in the U.S. in 1949 as "The Bicycle Thief" and in England as "Bicycle Thieves"), the classic 1948 Vittorio De Sica Italian neorealist melodrama ("Academy Award outstanding foreign language film 1949"; about a man and his son who search for a vital missing bicycle; most people rightfully consider this one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola, Lianella Carell, Gino Saltamerenda, and Vittorio Antonucci. Note that the Italian title literally translates to "The Bicycle Thieves", but for unknown reasons, the movie became "The Bicycle Thief" when it was released in English-speaking countries!

Important Added Info: Note that this poster was in mini/major auction that closed on Thursday, December 6th, but we ended it because there was confusion as to whether it was a 1955 re-release (as we identified it) or whether it could be a 1948 original release (the poster itself is undated).
It is my conclusion that this poster is almost certainly from 1955, but I didn't use to think so! What happened is this: I first auctioned this poster when I organized Christie's Auctions. I listed it in that auction as an original 1948 locandina, because I was told by Jose Carpio that it was.
But since that time, I have auctioned the R55 one- and two-panels, and both of those have the phrase "Il film piu' premiato del mondo" at the very top, and the same phrase is on the locandina. When you add in that the locandina's art is incredibly similar to the art from the R55 one- and two-panels, and it is VERY different from the art on the 1948 one-panel, I think it is extremely likely that this undated locandina is from the 1955 re-release, and that they did not put the date on it (which is not uncommon). But this great poster IS a "country of origin" poster for this Italian movie, and I do not believe that there would have been an earlier locandina, because I don't think that size was even made in Italy in 1948. I apologize for canceling the auction this was originally in, and know that this poster absolutely will sell to the highest bidder when it closes on December 18th.

Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases. Condition: very good to fine. There is a light horizontal crease across the center and there is very slight discoloration around the edges of the poster. The poster is otherwise in very nice condition and it displays well.
