Date Sold 6/19/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed Letter (measures 6 1/2" x 8 1/2"; 1 page) (Learn More) Norma Shearer was the great MGM leading lady of the 1920s and 1930s. She was married to studio head Irving Thalberg in 1927, and that seemed to greatly help her career, and his untimely death in 1936 seemed to coincide with the decline of her career. But that is probably really unfair, because while her marriage to Thalberg greatly helped her get top parts, she did wonderfully in many major movies! Some of her movies include: Romeo & Juliet (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), The Barretts of Wimpole Street, Marie Antoinette (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), The Divorcee (winner of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Escape, Free Soul (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Their Own Desire (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and The Women. She passed away in 1983 at the age of 80. Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by Norma Shearer! In it, she thanks David Mallery for his "most touching letter" and his "beautiful thoughts so eloquently expressed which I shall treasure". She goes on to say that it "seems just the other day when we made Romeo and Juliet at that wonderful MGM studio" where she was "privileged to act with so many beautiful and talented actors through those memorable years". Note that this letter comes from the estate of David Mallery. He was a professor of cinematography at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, from the 1960s into the 1990s. He was a founding member of the AFI (American Film Institute), and a member of the Motion Picture Academy. He was a film critic who wrote many reviews for many publications, and hosted a TV show where he interviewed directors, actors, and others involved in the film industry. Over the years, he developed both working and close personal relationships with many actors, actresses, and directors, including Frank Capra, Charlton Heston and others. We are currently auctioning 24 letters from directors and actors to Mr. Mallery. Almost all of them are written "from one friend to another", and are in no way "stock" replies to "fan letters", and all are personally signed, and some are entirely or partially handwritten. Most have excellent content covering a wide range of subjects, and they are a fascinating glimpse into these celebrities' personal lives! Condition: good to very good. There is some light brown staining around the edges of the letter and in the center (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
