William Wyler's Friendly Persuasion, the 1956 William Wyler (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Civil War military family melodrama ("It Will Pleasure You in a Hundred Ways!"; "In gorgeous color"; "Gary Cooper's best since 'High Noon'"; "A great star and a new star make 'Friendly Persuasion'!"; "The world's most talked - about motion picture!"; "From the Book by Jessamyn West"; "Hear Pat Boone"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a family of Quakers who are opposed to violence, and how they deal with the Civil War raging around them; to me, Gary Cooper was mis-cast in this role!) starring Gary Cooper ("in the towering role that tops even his 'High Noon', brings you the sensational new star..."), Dorothy McGuire, Richard Eyer (billed as "Featuring Richard Eyer"), Robert Middleton, Phyllis Love, Peter Mark Richman (billed as "Mark Richman"), Walter Catlett, Marjorie Main (billed as "The Widow Hudspeth"), and Anthony Perkins (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; billed as "Introducing the most exciting new star since James Dean... Anthony Perkins")

Important Added Info: Note that this script is the final draft from August 18, 1955 and the screenplay was written by Jessamyn West and Robert Wyler. Note that the script has a professional hardcover binding, which has information about the movie and the studio Allied Artists embossed on the cover. Note that the screenplay for this movie was actually written by Michael Wilson, a great screenwriter who was blacklisted in 1950, and moved to France with his family. On the script, Robert Wyler (brother of director William Wyler) is credited as co-author with Jessamyn West, the author of the source novel, but Robert Wyler was a "front" for Michael Wilson (and decades later, his name was properly added to the credits of this movie as the screenwriter). On this script, someone put "[Wilson, Michael]" in light pencil under the credited names!

UPDATED 7/8/2013 When we wrote the above description of Michael Wilson's involvement in the writing of this script, we relied on the information found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendly_Persuasion_%28film%29. But a film historian has contacted us and assured us that this information is very inaccurate, and that actually Michael Wilson solely wrote a 1946 "treatment" based on the book, but that he had nothing more to do with the project after that, and did NOT write this script (see both Joseph Dombrowski's 2002 article in the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, and "Controlling Hollywood: Censorship and Regulation in the Studio Area" by Matthew Bernstein [2000]). Therefore, we were wrong in saying that this script was written by Michael Wilson. When the matter was brought before the Screen Writers Guild, they determined that Michael Wilson deserved screenwriting credit, but apparently that was because they believed that West and Wyler had based their screenplay on the then ten year old treatment by Wilson. That may or may not be true, but it seems likely that Wilson did not directly contribute to the writing of the script we are auctioning here.

Condition: very good to fine. The interior pages have slightly darkened around the edges and there are some slight stains around the edges of the hardcover, but otherwise, the script is in pretty nice condition!
