A Paperbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 32" [59 x 81 cm]) (Learn More)

Montmartre, the 1897 French poster promoting a magazine named after the famous Montmartre region of Paris, France. Note that this poster features art of a woman in a fancy dress by Maxime DeThomas, who was part of an active Monmartre circle of artists and bohemians. He was a painter, lithographer, pastellist and illustrator. He was best-known for his set designs for the theater and opera. The influence of his friend, Toulouse Lautrec is obvious in this poster design. If anyone knows more about this magazine or poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Maxime DeThomas
Important Added Info: Note that if this image looks familiar, it is likely because you have seen it online, because it is posted regularly on sites like Pinterest, but this is the very rare original poster from 1897, which we have never auctioned before! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had been folded and had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, with minor wear on the folds. It had tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, with a rectangular area of paper loss below the final letter of the title, and above the word "RENAULT", slightly affecting the very top of the "ULT". It had some tears and small paper loss scattered in the title. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
