An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Minstrel Show Poster (measures 28" x 42") (Learn More)

The Neil O'Brien Great American Super-Minstrels, the circa 1900s traveling blackface minstrel musical show poster ("Oscar F. Hodge presents Neil O'Brien Great American Super-Minstrels"; "America's Best Known Band and Symphony Orchestra"; "Neil O'Brien creator of Progressive Minstrelsy"; "Peerless Dancing Stars of Vim and Versatility") advertising the traveling minstrel show. The only information about Neil O'Brien or his minstrel show that we could find comes from a past Jack Rennert catalog, where he described another example of this poster as follows: "As seen here, posters advertising Neil O'Brien (1869-1954) and his Great American Super-Minstrels would typically refer to O'Brien as the 'Creator of Progressive Minstrelsy'. Though this particular brand of minstrelsy is undocumented, we assumed that perhaps the focus of the spectacle was placed on the more dignified aspects of the impersonation rather than the outrageous side of caricature. However, the scenes put forth here, featuring 'Peerless Dancing Stars of Vim and Versatility,' though somewhat toned down, still feature traditional minstrel representations of carefree plantation partying and idyllic work conditions. Hence, the precise definition of 'Progressive Minstrelsy' remains elusive." Note that Mr. Rennert put an estimate of $1,200 to $1,500 on this poster, but we do not know what it sold for. If anyone knows more about this poster or Neil O'Brien, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has many light horizontal creases as though it was rolled up and then roughly handled and there are many small tears in the right border and a lesser number in the other three borders, and someone repaired most of them with clear tape from the back. There are some tiny areas of paper loss in the borders and some creases and faint smudges scattered through the poster.
