An Original Vintage Theatrical German Movie Campaign Book (measures 10" x 13" [25 x 33 cm]; 85 pages) (Learn More) Parufamet 1926-27, the 1926 German campaign book featuring art and information about upcoming Parufamet productions (this was at the time when Paramount Pictures and MGM bailed out UFA, which had overextended itself and was on the verge of bankruptcy, and in return, the company was renamed "Parufamet", and it had to distribute 20 films from each American studio in Germany each year). So the pages of this book have wonderful German ads for American movies, including The Unholy Three (Lon Chaney), American Venus (Louise Brooks), The Freshman (Harold Lloyd), The Merry Widow (John Gilbert and Mae Murray), Stage Struck (Gloria Swanson), Faust (F.W. Murnau), Road to Mandalay (Lon Chaney), and many more. Note that this book has much artwork for the movies that were being made at that time, and this book is REALLY elaborate, with each movie getting from 1 to 4 pages, all full-page full-color images, and high production values (most of the UFA campaign books we have seen are from the late 1930s and earlier 1940s, and are much simpler, without color, and we suspect that they had to cut back on how much they spent because of the costs of World War II). Note that even though this campaign book was likely sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived (and surely German editions of campaign books are even more rare than those sent to U.S. theater owners, both because of German World War II paper drives, and because the ones made during World War II have Nazi content!). I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is beyond rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that unfortunately this campaign book is incomplete. It originally had 133 numbered pages and 48 of them are missing, which means that 85 remain. The missing pages are 29 to 32, 47 to 52, 67 and 68, 71 to 74, 77 to 82, 85 to 90, 99 and 100, 105 to 108, and 117 to 126. The book was originally in a bound volume and it likely originally had covers that are not present, although there is a patterned page that looks like a cover on the outside that may have been the first interior page. There are three pages that are a table of contents, so one can tell what was on the missing pages by looking at those. While approximately one-third of the book is missing, the two-thirds that remains has REALLY wonderful images from great movies of the time (mostly American), and we have never seen another example of this incredibly rare book! Note: We have 12 images of the campaign books in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 12 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 2. Condition: fair. Approximately one-third of the book is missing and the book was removed from a bound volume (see above for exact details). The pages that are present all have tiny holes at the spine, where they were sewn into a bound volume, but they do not affect any writing or images. Otherwise, the pages that are present are in pretty nice condition (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
