You're actually surrounded by a horror horde of nightmare creatures!"; "All on stage! Right before you eyes!"; "See slave maidens at the mercy of hideous beasts! See Dead Painter Van Gogh materialize"; "The ethereal form of Elvis Presley and the posing apparition of Marilyn Monroe [Re-enacting famous Pin-up pose]"; "Free [in addition to everything else] so that you'll always remember!"; "To boys: Large spirit portrait of Marilyn Monroe [famous pin-up pose]"; "To girls: Large spirit portrait of Elvis Presley"; "Plus Horror Movie!"). The spook shows advertised by this poster were produced by Joe Karston and were performed by magicians that he employed such as Wayne Harris, Kirk Kirkham, Harry Wise, John Daniels and Johnny Cates. Spook shows started in the 1930s, and continued into the late 1960s, with their greatest prominence in the late 1940s and 1950s. Local theaters would book three to five low budget movies, and then advertise them as a late night "spook show". Often they would have "live" acts on stage (sometimes famous actors who had appeared in monster movies would appear on stage in full make up, and sometimes it would be local actors dressed as monsters), and often the posters would make outrageous promises (sometimes they might say a person would be beheaded on stage, etc!). Not too many of these spook show posters survive (almost all the known surviving ones are window cards, some of which are 14" x 22", and some of which are 22" x 28", and the shows certainly had very limited runs). The few "spook show" window cards that DO survive are rarely in even "very good" condition. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this Spook Show poster, and the last one was 8 years ago! Note that this poster needs to be shipped in a tube that measures between 42" and 44" long. Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some scuffs and tiny tears on parts of the folds, and a few small tears in the top border, with small paper loss in the left of the bottom blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
