An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Ambrose's Cup of Woe, the 1916 Fred Hibbard silent comedy short ("With All-Star Cast") starring Mack Swain (in the title role as Ambrose), May Emory, Joey Jacobs, Edgar Kennedy, and Josef Swickard. Note that Mack Swain originated the character of "Ambrose" while making movies for Mack Sennett (he had started working for Sennett in 1913), and several of them co-starred Chester Conklin as "Walrus" (named for his great mustache). Swain later took the Ambrose character to the L-KO Kompany, but he is certainly best remembered for his films with Charlie Chaplin, especially Chaplin's 1925 movie "The Gold Rush". Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare Triangle Keystone one-sheet from 1916. Mack Swain was one of their very top stars, and they printed one-sheets with a large image of him in the center, and under it, it said "MACK SWAIN with All-Star Cast HERE TODAY". At this time, Swain made lots of movies, and they probably thought it was wise to economize and make a single poster that theaters could use for any Swain short they were showing (making it likely one of the very first "stock" posters). But they likely quickly realized that theatergoers wanted to know if the movie they were showing was one that they had seen before, so they printed a paper snipe with the specific title of the movie, and it was glued over that bottom area! So there might be other surviving examples of this poster that have different snipes glued over the bottom area, but we have never seen this poster before, or any others like it. We HAVE seen a one-sheet from "Ambrose's Rapid Rise", which came out shortly after this movie, and that poster IS for that specific short, so we guess they gave up this stock poster idea soon after this movie came out. The poster measures 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm]. Condition: good. The poster has a jagged V-shaped tear in Swain's chin (the paper is "scrunched" together). There is paper loss 3" below that in his shirt. There is a small tear and tiny paper loss in his lip. There is separation at the top and bottom crossfolds. The poster was folded in half an extra time and there are creases scattered throughout the poster. While this poster has real defects, it IS just under 100 years old, and certainly, any talented restorer could repair the above defects and after proper linenbacking, it will look fantastic. But bear these defects (and the restoration costs) in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
