An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Chapter #13 (On Perilous Grounds) One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 25 3/4" x 39 1/4" [65 x 100 cm]) (Learn More)

The Avenging Arrow, the 1921 William Bowman and W.S. Van Dyke action adventure serial ("Produced by Ruth Roland Serials, Inc."; based on the novel "by Arthur Preston Hankins"; a cool story of a woman trying to discover why all of her female ancestors died before they reached 21 years of age!) starring Ruth Roland, Edward Hearn, Virginia Ainsworth, S.E. Jennings, William Steele, and Chief John Big Tree. Note that Ruth Roland was second only to Pearl White as being best remembered from silent serials of the 1910s. She started in movies in 1909, but in 1915, after the great success of White's "The Perils of Pauline" the previous year, Roland starred in her own 14 episode serial called "The Red Circle", and she went on to make six more serials for Pathe. After 1925, she only appeared in three more movies, returning to the stage where she had performed before entering movies. She passed away in 1937 from cancer, at just 45 years of age. Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this serial is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a different chapter one-sheet, a three-sheet, and three lobby cards (and no other movie paper of any kind) from this movie until we received this second one-sheet! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 25 3/4" x 39 1/4" [65 x 100 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had parts of the top, right, and bottom borders trimmed off, and the left 1" of the poster was folded back. The trimming at the bottom affected the small text, but not the image. The poster also had pinholes and tears around the edges, with a long irregular tear in the upper right that separated a large portion of the upper right from the rest of the poster, and there was a second 4" tear in the upper right that entered into the pole that Roland is holding. The poster had some staple holes scattered throughout, with pretty minor fold wear. It had some stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone decades ago backed the poster onto linen, doing very little restoration, and they then folded back the excess linen on three sides and folded back the left 1" (which included 1/2" of the poster) and mounted the poster to a stretcher. In spite of all of the above, the poster displays pretty well, and most of its defects are around the edges and in the long tear in the upper right corner, which is not very noticeable. The poster could be displayed as it is, or certainly, any talented restorer could remove it from the old linen and properly re-back it, and it will not require much paint restoration anywhere except around the edges.
