Note that future big-budget directors Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) and Joe Dante (Gremlins) both worked on this film, Demme directed the kung-fu scenes and Dante was a dialogue director. Producer Roger Corman also wanted to hide that it was filmed in the Philippines, and hired Curtis Hanson (future director of L.A. Confidential) to shoot an opening sequence in Los Angeles.
