Date Sold 7/21/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1937 (from the first release of this movie in the U.K.) Vintage Theatrical English Movie Pressbook (English pb; measures 10" x 14 3/4" [25 x 37 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Opera, the 1936 H. Bruce Humberstone detective mystery crime thriller ("Warner Oland vs. Boris Karloff"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; in a plot that heavily borrows from "The Phantom of the Opera", Karloff is an escapee from an insane asylum who had lost his memory, but now does remember, and hides in an opera house, determined to get revenge on those who tried to murder him 13 years earlier) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Boris Karloff, Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Charlotte Henry, Thomas Beck, Margaret Irving, and William Demarest. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this English pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this English pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle. There is 3/4" of separation at the right end of that horizontal fold, with some light wear around the edges of the pages. Learn More about condition grades
