An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Japanese Movie Poster (measures 20 1/2" x 30") (Learn More) the undated (likely 1938, but possibly 1939) Japanese double-bill release of Modern Times, the classic 1936 Charles Chaplin romantic automation assembly line factory worker comedy (about a man who struggles to live in modern industrial society with the help of a young homeless woman) starring Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Tiny Sandford, and Chester Conklin AND It's All Yours, the 1937 Elliot Nugent inheritance romantic love triangle comedy ("Linda's on the loose with- 4,000,000!"; "It's got love a la gay paree! It's got stars it's a joy to see!"; "Meet the gayest blonde who ever ran play-boys ragged on Broadway!....") starring Madeleine Carroll, Francis Lederer, Mischa Auer, Grace Bradley, and Victor Kilian. Note that this is one of only a very tiny number of pre-World War II Japanese movie posters I have ever seen, and it is the only one that features a major star (in this case, Charlie Chaplin!). The poster was created for a 1938 Japanese film festival, showing great double-bills, and this particular poster is for a double-bill showing of Modern Times and It's All Yours (note that Modern Times was released by United Artists and It's All Yours was released by Columbia, so two different studios are represented on one poster). We have had the writing on the poster translated, and at the very top of the following: "Cheerful and rigorously selected repertory of Schochiku-za originals", and the rest of the top and left half refers to Modern Times, and in addition to the title in Japanese, the following is written: "That's just what one would expect from Chaplin! A masterpiece of the complete series of laughs that can be enjoyed without logic"; "Chaplin played the leading part and also directed."; "Paulette Goddard, Supporting Actress"; "China Affair News"; "United presents"; "From Eighth to Fourteenth"; "Schochiku-za". The bottom and right of the poster refers to the other movie being shown, It's All Yours, and it reads: "Francis Lederer"; "Madeleine Carroll"; "Starring"; "Director: Elliott Nugent Director"; "Mischa Auer"; "Columbia Masterpiece"; "Tarrying for Love" (which was the working title for the movie); "Most cheerful film since 'It Happened One Night'! This is a treasured cheerful comedy." Of course, the poster also features a really cool artwork image of Chaplin (art we have never seen on any other Chaplin poster!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good. The poster has a metal hanger attached across the top blank border, with a small cloth hook attached to the middle of the metal. It has many water stains across the middle (but very fortunately, surrounding the Chaplin art without touching it). There are many smudges and stains in the bottom quarter of the poster and many tiny areas of paper loss in the bottom left corner. There are two small areas of paper loss in the bottom right corner. There is a line of oil or grease stain across the right half of the second line of writing at the top of the poster and similar stains in the top left corner, and in the background between the letters at top left. There are a few small tears in the borders and a piece of old tape on the back of the lower right border. Note that, in spite of the substantial number of defects this poster has, it is the sort that responds really well to expert professional restoration! Many of the stains are likely to be either somewhat or completely removable through chemical means, and the image of Chaplin is not affected by the defects, so after expert professional restoration and linenbacking, I believe the poster will look great (and I personally think it deserves to be in a museum, given the extreme rarity of pre-World War II Japanese posters of ANY kind!).
