GENE AUTRY (personality) GENE AUTRY (personality) Miscellaneous OR search current auctions Auction History Result 9r174 GENE AUTRY signed 7.5x9.5 publicity photo '40s wonderful portrait with Champion! Date Sold 3/6/2011Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" (8x10) Publicity Photo (Learn More) Gene Autry was a famous singing cowboy western actor from the 1930s to the 1950s. He began singing on radio in 1928, and by 1931, he had his own show. But his big break came in 1934, when he appeared in Ken Maynard's "In Old Santa Fe", and the audiences liked this "singing cowboy", and the next year, he starred in a really wacky serial "The Phantom Empire", which had an underground civilization and robots, but Gene managed to duck away every chapter to sing on his radio show! In 1936, he signed with Republic Pictures, and that ushered in the era of singing cowboy westerns, which soon became much more popular than most regular westerns. He continued his singing, writing over 200 songs, including his greatest ever, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", which sold over 30 million copies. He had a hugely successful TV show, and there was all sorts of merchandising, including toys, games, and comic books. He invested wisely in real estate and bought radio and TV stations, as well as the California Angels baseball team, and he became one of the most successful actors turned businessmen ever. Some of his movies include: Red River Valley, Melody Ranch, and Springtime in the Rockies. He always appeared with his horse Champion. He has five different stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (for movies, radio, television, recording, and live performance), the only person ever awarded five different stars! Autry passed away in 1998 at the age of 91. Important Added Info: Note that this photo has been personally autographed (signed) by Gene Autry! Also note that this still measures 7 1/2" x 9 1/2", but it does not appear to be trimmed. Note that many celebrities kept multiple 8" x 10" (or smaller) copies of good publicity images of themselves to sign for fans, and also many memorabilia shops sold such copy stills themselves. While they are not original stills, they are usually excellent clear copies, with a great shot of that celebrity in their heyday, which, when signed by the celebrity, makes for a wonderful framed picture on any fan's wall! Finally, note that this still also has a FACSIMILE autograph that is within the printing of the still (the still has NOT been personally autographed). About the Collection this Item Comes From Note that this item (and 27 others we are auctioning this week, each in its own auction) was consigned to us by a man who was a major movie memorabilia dealer in the 1970s and 1980s. During that time, he was approached by an elderly man named Sterling H. Bond, who had collected autographs for many years (starting in the early 1930s), and who sold the dealer his entire collection. Bond had tracked down many important Hollywood celebrities and obtained autographed items (often personalized to him), and he also had autographs from celebrities who were not in the film business (including famous politicians!). The dealer was so impressed with this collection that rather than sell it item by item, he began collecting autographs himself, sending celebrities items by Registered Mail which they then autographed and returned to him! He also purchased a few autographed items from top autograph dealers of the 1970s and 1980s. Now, decades later, the dealer has consigned these autographed items to us. So all of these 28 autographed items we are auctioning were either obtained by long time collector Sterling H. Bond, or were obtained by this memorabilia dealer, and we feel certain that the autograph on this item is authentic! Note that each of the 28 items from this consignor all have this paragraph on them. Condition: good. The blank borders have been unevenly trimmed. Learn More about condition grades
