An Original Vintage Paperbacked Theatrical Special One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 40" [69 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Blonde Venus, the classic 1932 Josef von Sternberg woman-sacrifices-all-including-her-integrity-for-her-sick-husband-who-turns-on-her romantic melodrama starring Marlene Dietrich, Herbert Marshall, Cary Grant, Gene Morgan, Dickie Moore, Francis Sayles, and Sidney Toler (in an early 9th billed role). Note that this was one of the seven movies that Dietrich made with director von Sternberg, and it is one of the best remembered, after "The Blue Angel" (which was the only one of the seven which was not a U.S. movie, because von Sternberg made it in Germany, in both languages).

Artist: Charles Lennox Wright
Important Added Info: Note that this movie was made at the height of Marlene Dietrich's fame, and Paramount commissioned noted artist Charles Lennox Wright to paint an angelic portrait of Dietrich. They then created this special one-sheet-like poster that was offered to theaters in the pressbook (see the image we include of that page of the pressbook, showing the offering). Special one-sheets like this are incredibly rare from any era, but finding one like this from 1932 is less likely than finding a needle in a haystack! The fact that it has survived is remarkable! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would almost certainly damage it, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded (it would have been a sin to fold this poster!). It had some creases, tiny tears, and tiny bits of paper loss around the edges, with more creases in the top and bottom borders than in the left and right. It had a 3" tear near the middle of the left border. It had some faint vertical creases scattered in the left of the poster, but none in Dietrich's image. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. It was well backed, and displays great. At some point after it was backed, it acquired the tiniest bits of paper loss in the extreme outer edges of the borders, but of course, that will not show if the poster is framed, and any restorer could very easily touch up those areas without re-backing the poster. I already envy the new owner of this poster, because properly framed, it will look unbelievable on their wall!
