An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Outlaw: The Story of Billy the Kid, the classic 1946 Howard Hughes biographical cowboy western romantic melodrama ("Trigger-fast action!"; "Sensation too startling to describe!"; "The last time Howard Hughes said he had someone to show you, he gave you two new stars... Jean Harlow and Paul Muni. Now he makes the same promise again and presents Jane Russell and Jack Buetel"; "At Last.. now you can see Howard Hughes' daring production The Outlaw"; produced by Howard Hughes) starring Jack Buetel (as Billy the Kid; "The Outlaw!"), Jane Russell (in her first big screen role!; "introducing Jane Russell"; "Mean.. Moody.. Magnificent"; "The woman who made him notorious!"), Thomas Mitchell (as Pat Garrett), Walter Huston (as Doc Holliday), Mimi Aguglia, and Joe Sawyer. The movie was almost released in 1941, but it was held up for five years due to censorship problems (there are posters and lobby cards from the aborted 1941 release, but they are extremely rare). Howard Hawks began this film as the director, but soon quit the project due to Hughes' constant interference. Hughes also designed the Cantilever bra for this film to better "show off" Russell's chest (who wouldn't wear it!).

Important Added Info: Note that this is from the first general release of this movie in 1946 (see below for why it took five years to release!). RKO made two different half-sheets for that release, but they did not mark either one as "style A" or "style B". Both are incredibly rare! We have only auctioned the other style once before (and that had major condition issues), and we have NEVER auctioned this half-sheet before! It was first made in 1941, and shortly before it could be released by 20th Century Fox, problems with the censors caused Howard Hughes to not release it at that time. He released it through United Artists in 1946, and then, in 1950, after he had purchased RKO, he released it again himself. This half-sheet is from the 1946 first general release of the movie. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good to very good. The poster had 2" of separation in the top and bottom of the vertical foldline and someone put tape on the back of those areas. They also put a piece of tape on the back of each corner and also a piece on the back of a 1/2" tear near the middle of the bottom blank border. There are two other tiny tears in the bottom blank border that do not have tape on the back. There is surface paper loss in much of the bottom half of the vertical foldline and in the top 2". There are several slightly diagonal creases in the right half of the horizontal fold, with scuffs and vertical creases between them. There is tiny paper loss at the crossfold. Other than the above defects (which are truly not very distracting, because everyone will be looking at the left half of the poster!), the poster is in pretty good condition. Certainly, it can be displayed just as it is, or restoration can be performed, but either way, I envy the new owner of this really rare and really cool poster!
