An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 46 3/4" x 65" [119 x 165 cm]) (Learn More)

Le Paradis des Pilotes Perdus (released in the U.S. as "The Hell of Lost Pilots"), the 1949 Georges Lampin French airplane aviation crash thriller (about a French plane forced to make an emergency landing in the middle of a desert) starring Henri Vidal, Michel Auclair, Andree Debar, Paul Bernard, Arlette Thomas, Rene Blancard, Robert Dalban, Jean Daurand, Jean-Pierre Mocky, Antoine Balpetre (billed as "Balpetre"), and Daniel Gelin
Artist: Hinotte
Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Also note that first release 1949 movie paper from this French movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single poster from this movie until we received this French one-panel! Also note that while this poster is linenbacked, it also has an unusual aspect to it, but something we have seen in some older large posters. In order to allow it to be hung on the wall without framing, someone inserted the top and bottom of the poster into the center of a split wooden dowel, and the weight of the dowels allowed for the poster to hang perfectly straight, without any kind of framing. One could take this poster and display it the same way, or certainly, the dowels could be removed and the poster could then be framed (or additional restoration could be performed).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. Many years ago, the poster was mounted onto a thin linen and the top and bottom of it was inserted into wooden dowels (see above). Before it was backed, the poster had some tears and tiny paper loss on parts of some folds and in the borders. Unfortunately, over the years, the poster was handled roughly, and there are now folds along two of the original horizontal folds, which has caused the poster to somewhat "crack" along those folds. There are also water stains scattered down the left of the poster, extending into the poster itself. In spite of all this, the poster could be displayed as it is, or certainly, it could be removed from the old linen and re-backed, but bear in mind this expense and its defects before bidding on this poster.
