An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

The Broken Earth, the 1936 Roman Freulich black African American family relationship religious farming short (about a black farmer in the South working in the fields, and he comes home to find that his young son is dying; he prays to God for salvation for his son, and God answers his prayers and saves his boy; there is background music by the Shaw Ethiopian Choir) starring Clarence Muse. Note that this is a fascinating and important short movie (it is only 11 minutes long). It was directed and written by Roman Freulich, who was born in 1898 in what was then Poland (later part of Czechoslovakia), and he came to the U.S. in 1912 as a teenager. In the very early 1930s, he and his brother Jack became famous still photographers, and they shot many of the most iconic images for the great early sound Universal horror movies, including Frankenstein! The Freulichs were Jewish, and Roman in particular was fascinated with the plight of black African Americans in the U.S., and he conceived this short movie while he was still a major still photographer. He hired Clarence Muse, a well known black actor, to star in it, but everyone else in it were amateurs, and the farming scenes at the beginning showed real farmers plowing the fields. We imagine he intended this movie to be distributed by a major studio (likely Universal), but probably the only one he could get to distribute it was Sack Amusement Enterprises, which distributed all-black films. It was the only movie he made. His brother Jack passed away in 1936, the year this movie was made, but Roman lived until 1974, and had a long and distinguished career. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster! We have only auctioned it once before, and that was ten years ago (when we could find next to no information about it), and it auctioned for $355!

Condition: fair to good. The poster has paper loss in the "EN" of "CLARENCE" at top center and in the middle of the right border, extending into the edge of Muse's head. It has some tiny paper loss in the rest of the borders and is somewhat fragile. But certainly, any talented restorer could pretty easily replace the paper loss described above (and we can provide a quality image of the missing areas), and after proper restoration, this extremely rare poster will look fantastic!
