Date Sold 7/12/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Greeting Card (measures 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" [19 x 24 cm]) (Learn More) Mae West (born Mary Jane West) was a major star in the early and mid 1930s, as famous for her racy comments and raw sexuality as for her actual acting achievements. She was the toast of Broadway during the late 1920s, because for ten years, she had starred in a series of very sexy plays, including "Sex" in 1926, for which she was prosecuted on morals charges in 1927! In 1928, she starred in "Diamond Lil" (which later became the 1933 movie "She Done Him Wrong"). But due to censorship difficulties, she made very few movies, and those were greatly toned down versions of her stage successes. Some of her movies include: Night After Night, She Done Him Wrong, I'm No Angel, Belle of the Nineties, Goin' to Town, Klondike Annie, Go West Young Man, Every Day's a Holiday, My Little Chickadee, The Heat's On, Myra Breckinridge, and Sextette! She passed away in 1980 at the age of 87. Artist: Beryl LeMaine Important Added Info: Note that what is offered in this auction is a very "risque" greeting card which Mae West sent to her friends in 1937! Miss West (always one to "push the envelope") sent out cards like these to her friends in the 1930s! Each year she would have a completely different card created, and we are currently auctioning this one from 1937 and another one from 1933. The cards were extremely "naughty" by 1930s standards, and only a star of Miss West's magnitude could have gotten away with sending them. This card has "Every Day's a Holiday" printed on the front, with a facsimile of her signature under it. That was the name of a movie she made in 1937, which is why she used it for her card. The inside is a printed card which has been glued to silver foil, and both of those were then glued to the card itself. The printed card has an artwork image of Miss West and Santa Claus by Beryl LeMaine, and the printing on the card reads "Mae - Santa, it certainly took you long to get here, Santa - Well, I'm a guy what takes his time [a line from a song she sang], Mae - Men want women, women want diamonds - that puts the men on the rocks. All I want for Xmas is enough sables to keep me warm and enough diamonds to keep me cool. This may be your holiday, Santa, - but 'Everyday's a holiday' for me." (see our images). Our consignor purchased this card and one other many years ago at an auction where they were selling a number of items from Mae West's estate. She purchased a box of random items, and these two cards were in that box, and we are auctioning them in two separate auctions! This card comes with the original blank envelope that it would have been mailed in (this card was never mailed). Condition: very good. There are faint scuffs and slight darkening on the front of the card. The interior of the card is in excellent condition. The blank envelope has creases on the flap. Learn More about condition grades
