An Original Vintage Movie Trade Ad (measures 11 3/4" x 16 3/4" [30 x 43 cm]; 2 pages) (Learn More)

Tarzan of the Apes, the 1918 Scott Sidney silent action adventure thriller ("The Wonder Story of the Age by Edgar Rice Burroughs") starring Elmo Lincoln (in the title role as "the screen's first Tarzan"), Enid Markey (as the screen's first Jane), True Boardman, Kathleen Kirkham, Thomas Jefferson, Bessie Toner, George French, and Gordon Griffith (as young Tarzan). Note that this classic book had been written four years earlier, but that it took four years for Hollywood to figure out how to film this book (in those pre-special effects days they were unsure of how to have the apes, which do lots of talking in the book). Elmo Lincoln reprised his role as Tarzan in "The Return of Tarzan". Note that he is normally referred to as the very first screen Tarzan, but actually it is the actor who played Tarzan as a boy in this movie, Gordon Griffith, who deserves that distinction!

Important Added Info: From the 1920s on, studios would create elaborate trade ads, often in full color, and often using the finest artists of the day. They would run these ads in their studio yearbooks and exhibitor magazines, and they would also print those trade ads separately and mail them individually to theater owners, trying to get them to book that specific movie. Sometimes those books and magazines are separated and the ads, which now greatly resemble the individually printed trade ads, are sold individually. The trade ad offered here was removed from a yearbook or magazine. It can be framed and displayed (but many trade ads have different images on each side, so one must choose which side to display if it is framed!).

Condition: good to very good. The spine has cleanly separated and is repaired with tape from the back but otherwise it is in pretty nice condition.
