An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Style B One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 25 1/2" x 40 1/2" [65 x 103 cm]) (Learn More) I Was a Captive of Nazi Germany, the 1936 Alfred T. Mannon political anti-Nazi melodrama ("Her own story!"; about a German-American woman who moved to her native Germany in the early 1930s, and the Nazis enlisted her to spy on her wealthy and important non-Nazi friends, and when she was no longer useful to them, they imprisoned her on false charges; a U.S. Senator named Borah interceded and was able to get her released and she returned to the United States; this is a true story, but it is told by Steele, so it is her account of what occurred; Steele and Borah play themselves in the movie, which was a low budget production) starring Isobel Lillian Steele ("The American girl victim of Berlin's political intrigue!"), and U.S. Senator Borah (note that we can find no credit for any other actor in the movie, or the writer; it seems likely that they were afraid of retaliation from the Nazis, which would explain why a major studio was not associated with the movie, and no major stars appeared in it at all!). Note that a key plot point of the movie is that Ms. Steele has a rag doll that is her only comfort while imprisoned, and she calls it "Malvina", after the initials of her best friends. The movie is produced by "Malvina Pictures Corp."! Also note that in 1936, the uncle of well known collector/dealer Russ Cochran, named Bill Cochran, headed to California from West Plains, Missouri with hopes of becoming an actor in Hollywood. Apparently, he landed there at the exact perfect time to get cast as the chauffeur in this movie, but alas, no more movie roles were forthcoming, and he returned to West Plains, and lived out his days there! Important Added Info: Note that we have only once previously auctioned another example of this poster (it was not the same as this one), and that one was four years ago. That one also has had a small amount trimmed from the left, right, and top blank borders, and it both examples measure 25 1/2" x 40 1/2" [65 x 103 cm], which makes us wonder if perhaps all examples the this poster measure that size. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good. The poster was never machine folded but it has been folded in half horizontally at center by hand. A small amount was trimmed from the left, right, and top blank borders, but only blank white paper was affected. There is a stain in the upper right blank border and some stains scattered across the top border. There is a 5" vertical tear at upper right that extends through the "P" in "PRESENTS" and slightly into the "A" of the title. There are a few smaller tears around the edges and a several creases scattered in various areas. Many of the defects affect blank paper, and the poster can certainly be linenbacked with some paint restoration, after which it will look great, but please bear in mind its defects and cost of restoration before placing a bid.
