An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Arizonian, the 1935 Charles Vidor Arizona romantic love triangle outlaw cowboy western ("Law and order ride the raw frontier!"; about a stranger who comes to a corrupt Arizona town, where an English singer is about to leave; she stays because of him, but it turns out he is the brother of her fiance, so they can't have a romance; the stranger becomes the sheriff, and with the help of his brother and a reformed outlaw, is able to clean up the town, but which brother will get the girl?; if you have seen any old westerns, you will surely guess the answer!) starring Richard Dix, Margot Grahame, Preston Foster, Louis Calhern, Willie Best, James Bush, Hank Bell, Bob Kortman, and Slim Whitaker. Note that the character Richard Dix plays in this movie is essentially a composite of mostly Wyatt Earp, but also other famous western sheriffs who cleaned up towns. A few years later, movies like these would have the title characters named after those famous sheriffs!

Important Added Info: Note that prior to 2014, we had never auctioned any first release items from this 1935 western other than window cards, lobby cards and stills. In 2014, we were consigned a half-sheet. Now, a different consignor has consigned this other style half-sheet, which we have never auctioned before (and the same consignor gave us the linenbacked one-sheet which is in Part I of this auction, and we had never auctioned before either). So these two posters (this half-sheet and the one-sheet) add considerably to the number of posters we have auctioned from this movie, and it might well be many years before we are consigned another poster larger than a window card. Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that while this poster technically COULD be rolled in a tube, the backing is heavy enough that we strongly advise against it. Therefore, we will only send this poster in a very large flat package, unless the new owner insists on a tube, and accepts responsibility for any damage caused by it being rolled. The poster will arrive fine and display great if it is sent in a flat package, but it will cost more to send this way, especially if the poster is being sent outside the U.S., so please only bid on this poster when you take into mind the cost of shipping it in a very large flat package.

What IS paperbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was folded in half an extra time and there was separation, tiny tears, and surface paper loss on most of the folds. There were stains in the bottom of Grahame's face, in her mouth and her cheek, and a few stains scattered in the rest of her face and in Dix's face. There were diagonal tears that formed a diamond at the center of the poster, extending around Grahame's eye and the background to the left of her cheek. There were areas of paper loss in the middle of the left blank border, with a 5" tear that extended into the middle left of the image. There were tears scattered across the top of the poster, with several extending into the image. There were tears in the bottom border, with tiny paper loss in the bottom center of the image. There were pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Obviously, one would prefer to find a better example of this poster, but it displays pretty well in spite of all its restoration, and we know of no other example of this very rare poster!
