A 1954 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Danish Movie Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 33 1/2" [62 x 85 cm]) (Learn More) The Petrified Forest, the classic 1936 Archie Mayo romantic crime thriller ("From Leslie Howard's Famous Stage Hit"; "The Stars of 'Of Human Bondage' Reunited For The First Time"; based on the play by Robert E. Sherwood; about an educated hobo, a pretty waitress, and a desperate criminal all interacting at a remote cafe) starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Charlie Grapewin, Humphrey Bogart (as Duke Mantee), Dick Foran, Genevieve Tobin, Porter Hall, Paul Harvey, Joe Sawyer, and Adrian Morris. Note that Humphrey Bogart is 4th billed, and was not pictured on many of the posters! He had begun acting on the stage in the 1920s, but to no real success. In 1930 he got a Hollywood contract at Fox Pictures, but he had little success there, and they released him after two years. He returned to the stage, and in 1936 finally was noticed in the small but vital role in the stage production of this classic play, where he appeared with Leslie Howard. Howard was signed for the movie version of the play, and he insisted, over studio objections, that Bogart be cast as well (he sent a telegram to Warners that read "No Bogart, no Howard"). Bogart never forgot this great kindness, and he much later named his daughter "Leslie". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Benny Stilling Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1954 re-release Danish poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, with some tiny bits of paper loss in the bottom of the vertical fold, and minor wear on the other folds. It had a faint censor stamp in the bottom right. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. The restorer left alone the faint censor stamp (it is not distracting, and of course, any restorer could touch up that area without re-backing the poster, but I would think few people would choose to do that).
