Auction History Result 2m127 GOLD RUSH WC 1925 great art of Charlie Chaplin freezing in the snow by his claim, ultra rare! Date Sold 12/16/2018![]() Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) The Gold Rush, the classic 1925 Charles Chaplin Alaska Yukon rags-to-riches slapstick silent comedy ("A Dramatic Comedy"; "Written and Directed [and scored] by Charlie Chaplin") starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin), Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Georgia Hale, and Henry Bergman. Note that this was the movie with the classic sequence of the snowbound Chaplin eating his shoe! Also note that the movie was filmed "on location", but only for a small part of the movie did they go to the High Sierras. For the close scenes, Chaplin had artificial mountains created out of chicken wire and burlap covering 200 tons of plaster, 285 tons of salt, and 100 barrels of flour, and the artificial ice and snow was made of the same materials. 4 carloads of "cornfetti" were used for the blizzard scenes. They also transported much of the same material to the Sierra mountains to enhance the scenes shot there. The entire production took over a year, from first filming to final cut! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we once auctioned a one-sheet, a three-sheet, and a six-sheet from this movie, which came from a remarkable find. But we have also only once before auctioned this window card, which has a much better image than the above three posters, because it exactly conveys the theme of the movie, and has a wonderful image of Chaplin. The previous example of this card that we auctioned was auctioned 23 years ago, when it sold for $5,750. It may be decades more before we auction another example of this card! Condition: good to very good. Someone glued white paper to the back of two corners. In both corners, it had paper loss in the blank border. The card also had water staining on much of the back of the card, except for the top center. Fortunately, because the card is on a thick paper stock, the water staining had a much lesser effect on the front of the card, although it is clearly visible scattered down the left and right of the card. Certainly, modern restorers can likely remove much or all of this water staining through chemical means, and after proper restoration, this card will look fantastic, especially because the colors are bright and the card has only minor border defects other than the staining. We can also imagine the new owner choosing to display it as it is, because while the water staining is noticeable, it is not really distracting. Either way, the new owner of this card will have a rare and wonderful poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades ![]()
