An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 21" x 28" [53 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Prisoner of Zenda, the 1895 stage play production ("Magnificent scenic production"; "Now for the king!"; "Flavia greets you"; "Where is He?"; "I know your secret"; "By special arrangement with Mr. Daniel Frohman"; "Dramatized from Anthony Hope's fascinating romance"; about a king who is about to have his coronation, and his evil brother has him drugged and kidnapped so that he can become king instead, but the future king's friends find an exact lookalike who takes his place, and he becomes the new king, and even wins the love of the real king's girlfriend, but he ultimately gives it all up when he gets a chance to rescue the real king). Note that this book was a massive success after it was written by Anthony Hope in 1894. The following year, Daniel Frohman, a major producer of plays, hired noted actor James K. Hackett to play both lead roles. It was another huge success. In 1913, when Frohman was forming Famous Players Film Company with Adolph Zukor, he thought to have their very first film be The Prisoner of Zenda, and he was able to lure James K. Hackett out of retirement to recreate his great success on film. The movie was very successful and helped Famous Players become very successful and led to the establishment of Paramount Pictures the following year!
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned an example of this poster, as well as posters from three other styles for this same play (a total of four different styles). We have this poster left, and then we have no more from this play, and barring something amazing happening, we will likely never again have a poster from this play (unless one of the buyers re-consigns the one they bought).

Condition: good. The poster was folded down the middle at one time. It had tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, and someone put a few pieces of tape on the back of some of the tears, but many were left as is. Please look at our super-sized image to get a good sense of the exact condition of this item.
