An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Murder By Television, the 1935 Clifford Sanforth TV murder mystery crime horror thriller (about an inventor of a new method by which television signals can be instantaneously sent anywhere in the world) starring Bela Lugosi, June Collyer, Huntley Gordon, George Meeker, Henry Mowbray, Hattie McDaniel, and Charles Hill Mailes. Note of course that television was in its infancy in 1935, and that the public was fascinated by it. Surprisingly, it did not "catch on" in any meaningful way throughout the 1930s and most of the 1940s, partially because the technology did not yet exist to transmit television signals long distances, and partially because it required lots of people owning enough TVs to warrant building transmitters and creating TV shows, but lots of people wouldn't buy TVs until there were lots of TV shows to watch, and this did not get solved until the early 1950s, over 15 years after this movie was made!

Important Added Info: Note that when you look at our auction history, it shows that we auctioned this poster twice before, and in fact we did. But this does not mean that there are three examples of this poster! In 1992, we were consigned this very poster, and the person who purchased it re-consigned it to us in 2013, 21 years later. The person who bought it from us in 2013 has now re-consigned it to us 5 years later. But it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a second partial vertical foldline 1/2" to the left of the regular one. There was tiny paper loss at the middle crossfold and small paper loss at the top crossfold, with a 2" of vertical separation at the middle of the vertical foldline. There were tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss in the top and bottom quarters of the vertical foldline. There were some brown stains in the bottom blank border, with two areas of paper loss in that bottom blank border. There were some tears and tiny paper loss in the top right corner, with brown stains in the right of the top border and a few tiny brown dot stains in the top of Lugosi's nose and above his eyebrow. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a thin linen, with no excess, with very slight attempts at restoration. The poster can be displayed just as it is, or certainly, a talented restorer could remove it from the old linen and re-back it. It will not require much paint restoration anywhere in the image, and afterward, it will display fantastically.
