A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" [14 x 20 cm]; 234 pages) (Learn More)

Since You Went Away, the 1944 John Cromwell World War II (WWII) Home Front romantic family melodrama ("David O. Selznick presents one of the greatest love stories of our time... Portrayed by the screen's most distinguished cast!"; "David O. Selznick presents his first production since 'Gone With The Wind' and 'Rebecca'"; "David O. Selznick in his first production since 'Gone With The Wind' and 'Rebecca' presents today's greatest love story... Big as America's heart... Poignant with separation, bright with hope, sparkling with laughter!"; based on the novel by Margaret Buell Wilder; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Claudette Colbert (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Jennifer Jones (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Joseph Cotten, Shirley Temple, Monty Woolley (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Lionel Barrymore, Robert Walker, Dorothy Dandridge, Hattie McDaniel, Alla Nazimova (in her last film appearance), Guy Madison, and Rhonda Fleming (in her second movie ever, in an uncredited role as "Girl at Dance"). Note that it is ironic that two of the leads in this movie, Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones, were married in real life, and it was producer David O. Selznick who was madly in love with Mrs. Jones, and his pursuit of her caused the couple to divorce during the filming of this movie, and she later married Mr. Selznick! Also note that this was actor Guy Madison's very first movie! He had one of the most unusual introductions to the movies ever. He was in the Coast Guard in 1944 at the age of 22, and while the this movie was being filmed, producer David O. Selznick wanted an unknown sailor for one of the important small parts, and he met Robert Moseley, and signed him on the spot, because of his good looks. They picked "Guy Madison" out of thin air, and billed him that way. After the movie was released, Madison received thousands of fan letters, and once he was out of the Coast Guard, he was signed to a contract, and he appeared in several movies in the late 1940s!

Important Added Info: Note that this is the Sun Dial Press photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: World Publishing (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. Oddly, in the case of this movie edition, they did not include any images from the movie within the book, but the stars' images are on the cover of the dust jacket. Perhaps it was published before the movie even was ready, so they did not have access to images from the film. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book.
