An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 3/4" x 41" [70 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

23 1/2 Hours Leave, the 1937 John G. Blystone military gambling comedy ("Edward L. Alperson presents the Mary Roberts Rinehart Saturday Evening Post story"; about a World War I soldier who has made a fortune by making wacky bets with his fellow soldiers, and then collecting on them, and he bets them that he can get married during a leave that is under a day long, but he runs into great difficulties) starring James Ellison, Terry Walker, Morgan Hill, Arthur Lake, and Ward Bond. Note that this movie is a remake of a silent movie from 1919 (with the same name). But there is a fascinating additional story about that! The 1919 movie was made by Thomas H. Ince, and starred Douglas MacLean, who became a star from playing that role. After Mr. Ince died, Douglas MacLean bought the rights to the movie from Mr. Ince's estate, because it had so much meaning to his career. But then, 18 years later, he saw young actor James Ellison in Cecil B. DeMille's "The Plainsman" and decided to produce a remake of this movie himself, starring Ellison, in the hopes it would do for Ellison what it had done for him.

Important Added Info: Note that this poster was printed by "Central Show". A constant headache for theaters was being sure of having movie posters for their current releases. Often, the posters would travel with the actual film prints, and sometimes the theater before them might have forgotten to include the poster, it might have been defaced or torn, etc. If a theater didn't have posters, it was very frustrating! Several companies began in the 1930s (Leader Press, the "other company" [Associated Displays Corporation], Woolever Press, etc) that made posters of their own for new releases, and they would provide a back up for theaters in case they didn't get a studio issued poster. Often the posters from these companies (with the exception of the "other company") were silk-screen posters, but they were often quite attractive, and virtually always had a completely different design from the regular studio issued poster. It is an absolute fact that posters from these companies are far more rare than the regular studio issued posters. It is also a certainty that these posters were issued when the movies were first released. In fact, they were created PRIOR to the movie's release, so that they could serve as teaser or advance posters (theaters rarely got the studio issued posters before receiving the actual movie). We have located an extremely rare original advertisement for Leader Press posters which clearly states that they were available to theaters a full two weeks prior to each movie's release. Sometimes these alternative printing posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters. Note finally that this one-sheet measures 27 3/4" x 41" [70 x 104 cm].

Condition: fair. The poster is in lesser condition. There are several defects scattered along the borders and foldlines/crossfolds, and there are one or more areas of significant foldline and/or crossfold separation. A few of the tears or other defects as described above are repaired with tape from the back. There are several pinholes scattered in various areas. Please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid and please do not bid unless you can accept the defects described above, or you are willing to pay to have them properly restored.
