An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Casablanca, the classic 1942 Michael Curtiz (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) anti-Nazi World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle melodrama ("From a play by Murray Burnett and June Alison"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; it is interesting to note that the movie was made while World War II was being fought, and at a point when it seemed very real that Germany might take over the entire world, and in that context, the strong emotions expressed throughout the movie are all the more poignant, given what was going on in the world at that time) starring Humphrey Bogart (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as "Rick", Richard Blaine), Ingrid Bergman (as Ilsa Lund), Paul Henreid (as Victor Laszlo), Claude Rains (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Renault), Conrad Veidt (as Major Strasser), Sydney Greenstreet (as Signor Ferrari), Peter Lorre (as Ugarte), S.Z. Sakall (as Carl), Dooley Wilson (as Sam), Madeleine LeBeau (as Yvonne), Leonid Kinskey (as Sascha), John Qualen (as Berger), Marcel Dalio (as Emil, the croupier at the roulette wheel), Corinna Mura (as the cabaret singer who plays the guitar and sings "La Marseillaise"), Helmut Dantine (as the young man playing roulette), and Joy Page (as Dantine's girlfriend, who is willing to sleep with Rains)

Important Added Info: Note that this poster is extremely rare. We have only auctioned it twice in all our years of auctioning, and the last time was 22 years ago. There are reported results from other auctions of examples of this poster having sold for very high prices, including one reported result of $77,675 in 2015, and that example was in lesser condition!

Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson.

Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since!

But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world!

Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions!

As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked).

This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones).

This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled!

Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "Humphrey Bogart".

Condition: good to very good. The poster has an extra vertical fold 1/2" to the right of the regular one. There is 1" of separation at the bottom two regular crossfolds. There is a slightly diagonal crease just above the right half of the top horizontal fold. There are three tiny light brown dot stains below the middle crossfold and several below the left of the middle horizontal fold, two in Henreid's jacket and several in the white background to the left of that. There are two stains in the same general area, but to the right of the large "V", in the background area. There are a few faint brown stains in the borders. There is a pinhole in each bottom corner and there was once a small piece of tape on the back of each top corner. There is tiny paper loss in the left of the bottom blank border, with a 1" tear in the top and bottom blank borders, and some very minor wear in the rest of the borders. There is a 1" scratch mark on the back of the bottom left of the poster that slightly shows through to the front in the credits. The back of the poster is slightly darkened, likely from when the poster was displayed with a mat behind the poster. I go into such detail on the condition defects of this poster because of its high value. Truly, they are almost all pretty minor. The poster could absolutely be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or one could choose to have the above defects corrected through linenbacking. Either way, the new owner will have one of the world's most desirable movie posters to display on their wall!
