Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan and the Golden Lion, the 1927 J.P. McGowan silent action jungle adventure fantasy thriller ("The story that stirred the nation!"; "A mighty spectacle"; "Edgar Rice Burroughs' colossal jungle story"; based on the famous novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs; about Tarzan being visited in Africa by his wife and her niece and others, and his niece is kidnapped and taken to a jungle city where they worship a lion god, and they plan to sacrifice Tarzan's niece to the lion, but Tarzan shows up and kills the lion, which causes the natives to acclaim him as their new god, and all ends well!) starring James Pierce (in the title role as Tarzan, Lord Greystoke), Frederick Peters, Edna Murphy, Harold Goodwin, Dorothy Dunbar (as Lady Greystoke, Tarzan's wife), D'Arcy Corrigan, and Boris Karloff (who plays the native chief, Owaza, with much body makeup). Note that the "golden lion" of the title of the movie refers to Tarzan's pet lion in Africa, named Jad-Bal-Ja, who was featured prominently in the advertising. Also note that after five Tarzan movies between 1918 and 1921, Edgar Rice Burroughs held off on making more Tarzan movies, because he was not happy with how Hollywood depicted his legendary hero. In 1927, he authorized this movie, hiring James Pierce to play the title character (and Pierce turned down the Gary Cooper role in "Wings", which made Cooper a major star, to take this role!). While most people did not feel that Pierce made a great Tarzan (they say he is better in the Lord Greystoke scenes than in the jungle scenes), and his career went nowhere after this movie, on the plus side, he married Burroughs' daughter Joan soon after the movie was released! This movie stays much more faithful to the book than most other Tarzan movies, and it was presumed lost for many years, until a French copy of it turned up, and that is 57 minutes long, so it is unclear if that is the entire movie, or a condensed version.

Important Added Info: Note that this is the Grosset & Dunlap photoplay edition of this novel in its original dust jacket. This book has the original dust jacket. Here are more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would usually include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and they are quite collectible, especially if they still have the original dust jacket! Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book.
