An Original Vintage Stage Play Playbill (measures 7" x 9 1/4" [18 x 23 cm]; 40 pages) (Learn More)

Petrified Forest, the 1935 Broadway stage play production (based on the work by Robert E. Sherwood) starring Leslie Howard, John Alexander, Humphrey Bogart, Milo Boulton, Charles Dow Clark, and Peggy Conklin. Note that Humphrey Bogart had begun acting on the stage in the 1920s, but to no real success. In 1930 he got a Hollywood contract at Fox Pictures, but he had little success there, and they released him after two years. He returned to the stage, and in 1936 finally was noticed in the small but vital role in the stage production of this classic play, where he appeared with Leslie Howard. Howard was signed for the movie version of the play, and he insisted, over studio objections, that Bogart be cast as well (he sent a telegram to Warners that read "No Bogart, no Howard"). Bogart never forgot this great kindness, and he much later named his daughter "Leslie".

Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, this is the play that got Bogart his second chance at Hollywood. Because the characters are billed in order of appearance, Bogart is listed last, and no more prominently than any of the others. Also note that this playbill has a wonderful 2-page ad for Camel cigarettes with Lou Gehrig endorsing them. They not that Lou has played in more than 1,500 games without a day off, and that such an accomplishment takes wind, and that Lou says "For steady smoking, I pick Camels. They're so mild they never get my wind or my nerves."! We did not picture this ad, but it has two great images of Lou Gehrig, one in a Yankees uniform swinging a bat, and another one smoking a Camel.

Condition: very good.
